Kumbh Mela – 2019
Kumbh Mela will be organized in the year 2019 Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) from January 15, 2019 to March 4, 2019.
Kumbh Mela is more than 2000 years old. The first written proof of the fair can be found in the accounts of Chinese travelerJuanzang, who came to India during the era of King Harshavardhana. Kumbh Mela is organised at any one of the four different places in every threeyears. And it takes a span of 12 years to return to any one place.
4 locations for Kumbh mela are Haridwar (Ganga), Prayag (Yamuna, Ganga and Triveni Sangam of Saraswati), Ujjain (River Siprapra)
, and Nasik (Godavari River).
The word kumbh literally means nectar. According to the belief, the story behind the fair is of the time when the Gods lived on earth. The curse of Rishi Durvas had weakened them, and the Asura (demons) had devastated the world. Brahma Devadvised the God’s to churn out nectar (Amrit) with help of Asura (demons).
After receiving the nectar, the God’s did not share the nectar (Amrit) with Asura (demons) as per their plans.
There was a conflict between the Gods and the Asura (demons), and the nectar fell on four places in Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nashik. It was said that water of these holy rivers turn into nectar in duration of Kumbh .
The timing of Kumbh Mela is determined according to the calculation of exact dates according to the combination of Jupiter, Jupiter, Sun and Moon positions.
