Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga – Kashi (Varanasi, Banaras) Uttar Pradesh
One of Shivaji’s most famous Shankar Temple all over the world, which is considered to be the most sacred, has immense reverence for every Hindu and center of faith it is none other than Shri Kashi Vishwa-nath Jyotirlinga. It is said that salvation can be attained in Kashi Nagar hence it is also called Mokshadham.
It is said that Kashi is sitting on Trishul of Shankar and the Ganga flowing through his hair also passes through this town. It is said that salvation by offering a bath in the Ganges and offering the water of the Ganges at Vishwa-nath can be found.
The Kashi Vishwa-nath temple had to face attacks many times and many rulers damaged the temple. Aurangzeb also destroyed the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque there. According to the records the temple was found in 1490. The present structure was made in 1780 by the Maratha ruler of Indore, Ahilya Bai Holkar. The temple is mentioned in the Puranas including the Kashi section of the Skanda Purana. It is believed that when the earth was built, the first ray of light was seen on Kashi. There are legends which believe that Shiva actually stayed here for some time. Shiva is considered to be the guardian of the city and its people.
