The first credit for making Ganesh Chaturthi such a huge social and public program goes to great king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

After the Mughal-Maratha wars, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who established the maratha empire used to celebrate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi to unite people together. With this inspiration, in the 19th century, Indian freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak established Ganesh Chaturthi as an important platform for uniting the Indians against the British Government.
